Playing Dress-Up: Ready, Set, Go!

Photobucket

Okay, so today’s post has absolutely nothing to do with style of any kind, as clearly demonstrated by today’s bland (but practical for being on the go) outfit. What this post is really about is a wonderful new addition to Grown-Up Lessons that will make it easier than ever for me to stay on top of outfit posts. “Psh, Elizabeth! We’ve heard that before!” I know, I know, I’ve been terrible, but my excuses to not putting up outfit posts are dwindling thanks to my now being the proud owner of a tripod. Believe it or not, I’ve made it so far without one, balancing my camera on chairs, tables, fences, etc. or by coercing my little sister/photographer into following me outside into sub-zero temperatures…

Even though I woke up late this morning, sucked down two cups of coffee and threw on a pair of sunglasses to hide the dark circles under my eyes, I just had to post a photo of my I’m-not-a-morning-person-today self, so excited was I that taking this shot with my new tripod took even less time than it did for me to throw on this ratty tee shirt and jeans!

Tee, American Apparel; jeans, JBrand; gladiators, UO; sunglasses, Fred Flare.

Playing Dress-Up: Paring Down

One of my less advertised New Year’s resolutions is to pare down my wardrobe to the nicest pieces that I love and wear the most. As a result, I’ve been doing some really critical closet cleaning and have quite a collection of clothes, shoes and accessories I’d like to be rid of. Most of them are still lovely and in really good condition (those that aren’t will find their way to Goodwill), so I’m setting up shop on eBay. You can visit my online shop here if you’re interested and if you happen to live close by, we can probably play around with shipping costs a bit. I’ll be adding new items weekly at the very least, so check back if you don’t find something you love right away!

THE OCCASION: QUIET AFTERNOON WITH THE KIDS
Everyone who has spent time around me lately is probably sick of hearing my bemoaning the increasingly apparent fact that I am going gray.
(If gray hairs aren’t grown-up, I don’t know what is.)
My dad went gray even before he was my age, and for most of my life he has had really striking white hair. I always thought it would be okay with me if that became my reality, too, but it probably won’t surprise you to hear that I’m having a hard time feeling alright about the fact that I have more grays than my mom. (She cheats though. Shh!)
Today I straightened my hair, which I usually abhor, but it made it easier to check out the gravity of the situation. Conclusion: It’s pretty dang grave. But I’m still strong in my resolve not to revert to being a chronic hair-dyer, which means you’ll all just have to put up with my gray hair laments from time to time.
On a much happier note, don’t you just adore menswear in autumn? Personally, nothing makes me feel quite as playful and relaxed as a big button down and cuffed trousers. I’m keeping it really pretty with pointy flats and some giant bangle bracelets.
Blouse, Gap; trousers, UO; shoes and bracelets, thrifted.

THE OCCASION: ERRANDS AND WORK
With the arrival of windy, brisk autumn days, the back-to-school bug has me. Picking up Kai and Amélie from school and spending afternoon playtime with them makes me want to live in jumpers, leggings, and rompers. In short, I want to dress the way I did when I was in grade school: fringe, ankle boots, jewel tones and all! This outfit is the callback to my childhood I’ve been craving, plus it has just the right of opaque-tights, suede booties, no-more-than-one-bold-color French girl-ness that I am starting to miss about living in Bordeaux.
Jumper, thrifted; shirt, TJ Maxx; necklaces and earrings, garage sales; tights, Galeries Lafayette; boots, Minnetonka.

THE OCCASION: NANNYING
You can take the girl out of the tee, but you can’t take the tee out of the girl. Despite efforts to try to establish myself as anything else, I’m a jeans-and-a-tee-shirt girl, and this one’s my new favorite. The pretty draping in front makes it interesting and sophisticated. It’s easy to throw on with my favorite pair of torn jeans and together, they make the perfect play outfit for when I’m with the kids.
Tee, Anthropologie; jeans and peep-toe slingback flats, Gap; hat, Kismet; hatband, homemade from a cotton drugstore headband and flower barrettes; earrings, gift from my sister.
